AON
Hydrological Modelling and GIS Analyst
This role is part of Aon’s Impact Forecasting Flood team, which develops catastrophe flood models used in the re/insurance industry. You will work on large‑scale hydrological modelling and GIS processing to help turn precipitation data into flood footprints and loss estimates for our clients.
What the day will look like
- Collaborate with the Flood team, especially colleagues working on rainfall–runoff modelling and flood mapping
- Calibrate and test large‑scale rainfall–runoff models using gauge and historical precipitation data
- Develop and refine stochastic flood event sets based on calibrated models
- Lead GIS and data workflows linking flood footprints, event definitions and exposure data to quantify losses
- Maintain and enhance event response infrastructure using external data (e.g. satellite flood footprints) and internal flood zones
- Contribute to post‑event and predictive workflows to recreate recent floods and estimate potential impacts for ongoing or forecast events
- Automate and stabilize processing pipelines using Python and GIS tools
We’re looking for a technically minded person with a strong interest in floods and climate, who enjoys working with spatial data and automation. You don’t need to be an expert in both hydrology and GIS from day one; curiosity, independence and a willingness to learn are what matter most.
Skills and experience that will lead to success
- University degree in Hydrology, Cartography, Meteorology, Climatology, Geography, Mathematics or a related Earth science field
- Strong skills in either GIS and raster data processing OR hydrology/environmental modelling (e.g. precipitation–runoff processes, river flow, catchments), with a desire to grow in the other area
- Experience using a scripting or programming language (such as Python or R) to automate tasks, ideally applied to GIS, raster or environmental data
- A careful, structured approach to working with data, including basic quality checks and clear documentation
It’s a plus if you’ve worked with hydrological rainfall–runoff or other environmental models, processed satellite or remote‑sensing data (e.g. flood footprints), are comfortable with Linux, Git and cloud or remote servers, and have experience in catastrophe modelling, flood risk assessment or a related field.
